Most people have never heard of Viktor Schauberger because the truth of his discoveries and observations have been intentionally hidden and much of his documentation destroyed, but his environmental work is incredibly important especially now when we are reaching alarming levels of degradation through the disruption of natural cycles in waterways and soils. Viktor was a caretaker of woodlands and forests, born on June 30th, 1885. His father was also a caretaker and Viktor’s family home, where he was born, was within an Austrian woodland. When you look him up you will notice that he has been dismissed as a pseudoscientist and a Nazi due to his brief interest in The Nazi Socialist Party, being recruited to invent air turbine engines and antigravitational UFO type craft for them; and the fact that he didn't follow the conventional science of his (and our) time. However, he was a gifted observer, naturalist, inventor and even philosopher. Others know him as a water wizard or expert, so astute was his understanding of waterways and the woodlands which he grew up surrounded by and emersed in that those that take their study of the environment seriously still use his observations and inventions in their work to this day. As someone who had a deep fascination with and curiosity about the natural world and strived to understand and copy nature we can learn many lessons from Viktor.
The following are some of those lessons:
Cold water carries objects better than warm water does.
When water is swirling in it's natural state, it can carry heavier loads.
Water has a kind of natural meandering where a pulsating space curve develops.
A river doesn't just flow due to gravity, but it winds and twists itself forward as it travels.
In places where the river bends, the current of the river is at its fiercest.
Rivers grind up and chew their stones which contain the minerals needed for their water.
Without bends and temperature variations there are no energy processes in a water course.
Rivers naturally make fjords which greatly reduce the risk of flooding by bringing the flow of water into the center of the river, drawing it away from the banks, keeping the excess flow in the middle of the river.
This natural middle flow system can be restored by building a kind of stairway, and strategically placing large rocks on the riverbed.
Temperature differences are essential to the water cycle - cool soil in the shade of trees is hit by warmer rainwater which sinks into the ground with ease. The water table is then replenished so the water comes back to the surface, evaporates, clouds form, and it rains down - completing what Viktor terms the full water cycle.
When trees are cleared, the complete water cycle is disrupted - clearing trees makes the soil warmer than the rain falling which means that the rain isn't absorbed into the soil, so is likely to flow into bodies of water which causes flooding. He termed this the half water cycle and wanted to help solve this problem with engineering. Viktor developed a machine that mimicked the production of spring water-like drinking water
Without woodlands we would have little to no healthy water.
Good humus soil in woodlands absorbs 90% of rainwater, like a sponge, which acts against flooding and erosion.
Shade providing trees grow naturally in the banks of rivers if left alone.
When trees are felled and land is cleared in a woodland, the remaining trees suffer - drying out and degrading.
One of the reasons fields of crops in agriculture declined is because the soil was affected by the rust from iron tools. Viktor observed that rust destroys life.
Copper is incredibly important to plants, soils and water. Viktor and his son made agricultural tools out of copper and registered a range of patents for these tools because they noted that trace elements were bought into the soil through their use. Others have found that there is an increase in fertility.
One of the tools that Viktor patented was a copper plow that turned the soil onwards instead of outwards called the Bio Plow. He did this with the intention of copying nature - in this case the way a mole dug. The plow turns the soil twice so that the layering of the earth remains intact.
He also made spiral copper pipes that twisted to mimic the natural way that water travels. The water flows through them in a spiral space curve which is the ideal water flow pattern
His designs and ideas are still used today to reduce algae in still ponds, in order to bring the water to life and not allow it to become stagnant.
